Lobbying  - Brussels 2055

Brussels 2055

Hey, my name is Johanna (26). Brussels in the year 2055 is my hometown, the world is my life. Back then, we knew everything. Already in 2025, studies had shown that lobbying influence in EU politics consumed €3.5 billion per year – and prevented more CO₂ reduction than any coal mine ever emitted.
Energy, pharmaceutical, and data corporations etc. held the strings. Not through open corruption – but through legislative wording that acted like invisible filters: life-saving medicines delayed; filter-bubble algorithms polarizing debates; agricultural policies indirectly clearing rainforests. Studies showed that countries with strict lobbying laws had higher life expectancy.
For decades, lobbying worsened social inequalities. The turning point came when data showed that fairer societies were more stable and economically successful. Lobbying for social justice became the new standard. Freedom of speech experienced a renaissance as media platforms became more transparent under public pressure.
But we learned. The transparency mandates of 2037, block chain tracking for lobby contacts, digitized direct citizen juries – they broke the monologue.
Today, in 2055, the air in Delhi breathes clean again, and even oil companies profit from artificial photosynthesis.
I smile. Lobbying hasn’t disappeared. But now it works for us.
Finally.
